Use of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄ or LFP) Batteries

19 August 2026

As the use of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄ or LFP) batteries becomes increasingly popular within the boating community,  we would like to draw your attention to recently published guidance from the Cruising Association (CA) and the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) regarding the safe installation and operation of these battery systems aboard vessels:

CA IWA Guidance Note Domestic Lithium Battery Installation V1

Whilst LiFePO₄ batteries can offer significant advantages over traditional lead-acid batteries, including improved performance, reduced weight and increased service life, the guidance emphasises that they are not a simple "drop-in" replacement.

We have listed the key messages from the guidance below:

  • LiFePO₄ battery installations should be carefully planned and properly engineered.

  • Existing charging and electrical systems may require modification or upgrading to ensure compatibility.

  • Battery Management Systems (BMS) are essential for the safe operation and protection of lithium batteries.

  • Incorrect installation can result in equipment damage, system failures and increased fire safety risks.

  • Vessel owners undertaking a conversion should seek competent professional advice where appropriate.

  • A thorough assessment should be completed before any installation work commences.

We strongly encourage anyone considering the installation or upgrade of lithium battery systems to familiarise themselves with the guidance before proceeding with any works.

Further information can be found on the Cruising Association website:

The harbour authority recommends that all electrical modifications carried out on vessels berthed within the harbour are undertaken to recognised marine industry standards and in accordance with manufacturers' specifications.

Should you have concerns regarding electrical installations aboard their vessel, they are encouraged to seek advice from a suitably qualified marine electrical professional.

Thank you for helping to ensure the continued safety of all harbour users.
